Москва. Середина девяностых годов. На чердаке одного из домов по Спиридоньевскому переулку обнаружен раненый сотрудник ФСБ майор Кольцов. По словам пострадавшего он проверял полученную от осведомителя информацию, но во время оперативных действий два вооруженных молодчика напали на оперативника, одного из нападавших удалось ликвидировать, второй - сбежал. В то время, время "лихой" свободы и почти полного бессилия милиции против заполонивших столицу организованных преступных группировок, вооруженные стычки, разборки и заказные убийства не были чем-то из ряда вон выходящим. Но нападение на сотрудника ФСБ переходило все грани. Раскрытие этого преступления стало делом чести для оперативников. Коллеги майора Кольцова начинают расследование.
