George R.R. Martin
The Game of Thrones novel was published in 1996 and is the first book in the A Song of Fire and Ice series. It is an epic seven hundred page novel brought to life in an engrossing 33 hour audiobook narrated by British character actor Roy Dotrice.
Other books in Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series include A Clash of Kings (1999), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast of Crows (2005), and A Dance with Dragons (2011). Other books by Martin that are now available to discover as audiobooks include Dying of the Light (1977), and Fevre Dream (1982).
When not writing his own novels, Martin contributes to other book series as an editor. One series edited by Martin is the Wild Cards series – that includes titles Wild Cards I, Wild Cards II: Aces High, Wild Cards III: Jokers Wild, Wild Cards IV: Aces Abroad, and Wild Cards V: Down and Dirty.
In addition to editing and authoring short stories and novels, Martin is a screenwriter and has written for a number of television shows in the 1980s and 90s. Martin became a writer in 1979, after graduating Northwestern University in 1971. Martin spent a short period in the late 1970s teaching English and journalism at Clarke University in Iowa.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. As Warden of the north, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must...and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty. The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, the vengeance-mad heir of the deposed Dragon King has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities. He claims the Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones fans watch in delight as the epic battle of Lannister and Stark entangles the Seven Kingdoms. But only the sharpest notice how these houses echo Lancaster and York in the War of the Roses. Druids, Catholics, and even Zoroastrians wander through Westeros, reframing their religions for a new world of fantasy. But how medieval is Westeros? Did lady knights and pirates really battle across Europe?
