Dans le fragment d'histoire, le narrateur reçoit un livre ancien d'un étrange libraire, et lorsqu'il le ramène chez lui et l'examine, des événements étranges et sinistres s'ensuivent.

L'histoire commence par un narrateur expliquant qu'il est sur son lit de mort et ressent le besoin de partager une histoire particulière avant de mourir. Il raconte l'histoire d'un vieil homme calme et légèrement fou qui vit dans le Gray's Inn avec son chat de compagnie. Le fou est hagard et hanté, paraissant plus âgé que son âge et terrifié par les cloches des églises. Un jeune homme nommé Williams (le narrateur) emménage dans l'auberge et essaie de se lier d'amitié avec le vieil homme et de lui faire partager ses connaissances. Il est révélé que l'homme est Lord Northam d'Angleterre.

L'Arbre est une nouvelle macabre écrite en 1920 et publié en octobre 1921 dans The Tryout . Sur un versant du mont Maenalus en Arcadie se trouve une oliveraie qui pousse autour d'un tombeau en marbre et des ruines d'une ancienne villa. Là, un arbre gigantesque ressemble à un homme effroyablement déformé, et les racines de l'arbre ont déplacé les blocs de la tombe. Le narrateur explique que l'apiculteur qui habite à côté lui a raconté une histoire à propos de l'arbre : Deux sculpteurs de renom, Kalos et Musides, vivaient dans la villa à colonnades, qui était " resplendissante " à son époque.

Le tombeau est une nouvelle écrite en juin 1917 et publiée pour la première fois dans le numéro de mars 1922 de The Vagrant . Elle raconte l'histoire de Jervas Dudley, qui devient obsédé par un mausolée près de sa maison d'enfance. Alors qu'il est encore enfant, il découvre l'entrée cadenassée d'un mausolée appartenant à la famille Hyde, dont le manoir voisin avait brûlé de nombreuses années auparavant. Jervas tente de casser le cadenas, mais en est incapable. Découragé, il se met à dormir à côté du tombeau.

Le Vaisseau mystérieux est une œuvre inachevée, écrite en 1902. Elle est considérée comme faisant partie de la juvénilité de Lovecraft, ou de ses premières œuvres. Lorsque le vaisseau apparaît, une personne disparaît. Le capitaine du navire doit être capturé pour résoudre ce mystère. Mais qui est-il ? Peut-être n'est-il même pas un être humain.

The Alchemist est une nouvelle écrite en 1908, alors que Lovecraft avait 17 ou 18 ans, et publié pour la première fois dans le numéro de novembre 1916 du United Amateur. L'histoire est racontée par le protagoniste, le comte Antoine de C, à la première personne. Il y a des centaines d'années, le noble ancêtre d'Antoine était responsable de la mort d'un sorcier noir, Michel Mauvais. Le fils du sorcier, Charles le Sorcier, a juré de se venger non seulement de lui mais de tous ses descendants, les maudissant de mourir à l'âge de 32 ans.

Roman court de science-fiction initialement publié dans les numéros de février, mars et avril 1936 du magazine Astounding Stories. Rédigé par Lovecraft en février et mars 1931, ce roman a connu de nombreuses rééditions depuis la mort de l'auteur. Écrit à la première personne par le personnage narrateur de William Dyer, professeur et géologue de la prestigieuse Université de Miskatonic, le récit relate de terrifiants secrets relatifs à une expédition scientifique en Antarctique, dans l'espoir de dissuader l'envoi d'une prochaine équipe qui se risquerait à une mort certaine.

Le Festival (The Festival) est une nouvelle de Howard Phillips Lovecraft, publiée pour la première fois en janvier 1925 dans le magazine Weird Tales. Le narrateur revient dans la vieille maison familiale, à Kingsport dans le Massachusetts pour la fête familiale traditionnelle de Yule. Là, il voit le Necronomicon parmi un certain nombre de grimoires. Le narrateur commence à le lire jusqu'au moment de la cérémonie qui clôt le festival. Durant celle-ci, l'ouvrage est utilisé et adoré par les participants. Le narrateur devient fou et est interné à l'hôpital de l'université Miskatonic à Arkham.
