Shayla Sivert lived in the Middle East on and off from 1978 to 1987. Travelling to Lebanon to live for a short while in 1983 in the midst of its civil war, she experienced the love of a family she had only just met and the vibrant sensations of a country filled with beauty, history, and tragedy, all which became a part of her, never leaving her memory or her heart. While raising her two sons, Shayla enjoyed a career teaching English as a Second Language at Palomar College in San Diego County and later went into administration, all the while serving international and resident students as well as migrant workers and visitors to the U.S., many unaware of the strength and light that they carried with them each day.
