David has always loved to write; anything from press releases to marketing pieces and blogs. However, his passion is sharing his experience. His books are based on a journey that only comes from years of living it and getting through it successfully. The latest offering, "Build a Nonprofit Castle.....With 8 Tools Hidden in the Sands" draws on the 30+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector. It highlights eight keys that organizations possess and can enhance to bring about better results. It is rooted in his most recent experiences as a consultant, but also 30 years of serving as a volunteer, nonprofit board member, and the executive director of a foundation for nearly 10 years. Growing up in the Greensburg, Indiana area, Fry was the youngest of four siblings and always found himself in tune with a creative side. Living on a farm, presented a number of opportunities to interact with nature, something he later realized was an attraction of being labeled an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person.) Relatively shy, he later found outlets in the arts and on stage, founding organizations and supporting others. After a successful 20+ year career in the financial industry where he served nonprofit clients, he resigned his position to work in the nonprofit sector and returned to school in his later 40's to receive a Masters in Philanthropic Studies. He experienced nearly ten years of raising funds, managing boards, and donor relationships gaining valuable nonprofit experience. In 2015, David launched his business, Effective Advancement Strategies, with a goal of "advancing people and organizations." As a Certified DISC Trainer, David has worked with a number of groups on improving their effectiveness through strategic planning, board development, communications, and fundraising. In 2017, he trademarked a card deck, "Board Buzz" that helps nonprofit boards launch deeper conversations around their organizations practices and needs. A few years later, he introduced the "Nonprofit Health Index" which helps organizations measure themselves against best practices in the industry. In early 2021 he released his first book, "Purpose in the Darkness." The book detailed a personal life of over 40 impactful losses that had the ability to derail his life, but instead he found a new purpose, community work through nonprofits. The book discussed concepts such as faith, DISC, and HSP and how they impacted his journey through grief and loss. At the start of 2023, he introduced product packages that would allow organizations to pursue growth in the areas of volunteerism, board governance, strategic planning, and fund development. The packages were intended to allow smaller organizations to pursue consultant-type services without the traditional costs involved. In 2024, David released the second edition of "Purpose in the Darkness," with a subtitle of "A Journey of Faith in a Lifetime of Loss." He updated with a new chapter, new inspiration section, new anecdotes and photos spread throughout. He details the role that nonprofit work played in allowing him to navigate a life of loss.
