Cynthia Beebe is the author of "Boots in the Ashes" a memoir of her 27-year career as a trailblazing female ATF special agent. She enjoyed writing the inside story of her investigations into bombers, arsonists and bikers. She loved researching the court archives to find and include remarkable trial testimony from victims, witnesses and outlaws. She drew from articles on her cases that were chronicled in the "New York Times", "Chicago Tribune", "Ladies Home Journal", as well as CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN. But depicting her life in the office and at crime scenes, often the only woman in a group of federal agents, street cops and prosecutors, was more difficult, although often fun and funny.
She also explains the crucial, fascinating impact of Title IX on society and in her life - how the law passed in 1972, causing an explosion in the world of women's sports and enabling her to earn a college softball scholarship. She discusses the ongoing battle for equal pay and equal opportunity. She writes about the adoption of her son as a single parent and the changes it brought to her work-life balance.
In the end, "Boots in the Ashes" is about how the author conquered the exceptional challenges of being a woman at an extraordinary place and time in history.
Beebe has a B.A. in English literature and a master's in journalism, both from Northwestern University.
