I've been an academic all my life, primarily writing for a very small group of like-minded academics. It got boring. Following a true crime story from the start (well, not the murders) to the finish is a fascinating process. Hearing arguments in a court room are far more involved than what we learn reading the papers. And visiting jails? While that's not for the faint of heart, it's truly enlightening. My work is guided by substantial research and a desire to tell the stories we rarely hear. As an author, I get to be the vessel that brings the voices of the criminals, the investigators, the families and the courts to the written word and to your eyes and ears.
