About this listen

Professor Derek Rutledge is hated and feared by all of his students. Strict, reserved, and ruthless, he doesn't tolerate mistakes and has little patience for his students.

Shawn Wyatt is a 20-year-old struggling to provide for his younger sisters after the death of their parents. On the verge of losing his scholarship, Shawn becomes desperate enough to go to Professor Rutledge.

Everyone says Rutledge doesn't have a heart. Everyone says he's a ruthless bastard. Shawn finds out that everyone is right. He strikes a deal with Rutledge, but unexpectedly, the deal turns into something so much more.

Something all-consuming and addictive. Something neither of them wants.

Note: This book contains steamy M/M scenes and a teacher-student relationship.

I thoroughly enjoyed this but wasn’t blind to its flaws and unbelievability

20 yo Shawn Wyatt is sole guardian of his 4 yo twin sisters and the part time job and childraising doesn’t leave much time for his university studies or a girlfriend. Facing course failure, he approaches his arrogant and harsh professor with a desperate offer. Told in the 3rd person from Shawn’s perspective, he is a decent and sympathetic character and it’s great to watch him markedly grow and change, he carries the story. At the same time we’re left guessing about Professor Routledge’s state of mind most of the time, so his decision-making seems pretty random and unrelatable. Having said that, he does slowly thaw and his backstory explains a lot. The twins play a prominent role in the story but they seemed to get rolled in to say something cute and precociously important then unceremoniously rolled out again - I was a little scandalised at the times they were left unsupervised. What salvages the book is the spontaneous chemistry and growing tenderness - they make up for everything. It took me a little while to warm to audio narrator Joshua Macrae’s voice but I grew to love it; he does a great arrogant voice for Routledge and he captures the chemistry and tenderness extremely well.

Can't wait for the rest of the series!

I fell in love with this series last year and was so excited to see it available in audio. Hopefully they will all be available soon.
