Story
At the very end of the Ladies’ Frocks Departments, past Cocktail Frocks, there was something very special, something quite, quite wonderful; but it wasn’t for everybody: that was the point. Because there, at the very end, there was a lovely arch, on which was written in curly letters Model Gowns. Written by a superb novelist of contemporary manners, Ladies in Black is a fairytale which illuminates the extraordinariness of ordinary lives. The women in black are run off their feet, what with the Christmas rush and the summer sales that follow.

Story
It’s 2006, and terror scaremongering in the media has rattled the residents of sleepy, suburban Dunlop Crescent. When a Maori family moves into number 14, the local cranks assume they are Middle Eastern terrorists hell-bent on destroying the Australian way of life. Rumour has it that they plan to turn their house to face Mecca. This sets off an extraordinary chain of events that embroils the entire neighbourhood as well as cynical media figures, bumbling antiterrorist police and a gang of white supremacists with a radical plan to wake up the country and ‘preserve Australian values’.

Whether you view living alone as the ultimate compromise or the ultimate luxury, it presents daily challenges, such as cooking for one, organising holidays, juggling finances and avoiding the siren call of wine, Ugg boots and Netflix. And there are the less tangible tests, like nailing the octopus of loneliness to the wall and holding your head high in a society where solo living is viewed (consciously or not) as the runner-up prize.

Same as 'The Power of Now'
- By Ross Skyring on 21-07-2016
Publisher's Summary
At the school gate, when she accidentally kissed one new friend on the nose and called another a "beautiful man-horse", Rachael realized that small-town France could hardly be more different to beach-side Australia. The smell of cigarettes replaced the tang of bone-broth and sprouted sourdough, the neighbors sometimes came to blows and under no circumstances would anyone wear active wear in public. Ever.
Muddling through every interaction in terrible French pushed Rachael's family to their limits. Some days, everybody cried and ate their feelings with almond croissants. But the town of Sommières embraced these ragtag Australians, and the family fell in love with their temporary hometown and its outrageous gossip, cobblestoned beauty and kind, eccentric inhabitants.
Pardon My French is a candid, hilarious love letter to family life and France with three valuable lessons for overcoming adversity: make home a beautiful nest, lean into the tough lessons and look for the comedy in everything.

Learn French already, or stop complaining!
An interesting premise, however she goes on and on about her poor French, and I don't understand why she didn't start learning prior to moving to France, or make a better effort once there! Either learn the language or just deal with the situation you put yourself in! A tedious listen for me, it took me ages to get through because it was nowhere near as good as the blurb suggested it to be. Yeah, nah.

C’est Genial
Fabulous and inspiring, honest and gritty and guffaw inducing! Especially loved listening to the author’s, Rachael, own voice. Really peppered the already flavoursome tales with more vibrancy and integrity. Would recommend any dreamer/Gen-Amelie/Francophile who (like me) has dreamed of skipping off to live in the South of France. C’est magnifique!

An easy listen
A nice lighthearted story. It unexpectedly made me think about my life, my home and my parenting style while regularly asking my husband if we should move to France for a year. Whizzed through it super quickly and felt good after a listen. I also appreciated my strong Australian late more than ever (having tried French espresso on more than one occasion).

A good beginning
This book starts well. The author is observant & honest about her big adventure in France. But the book is too long, boring towards the end. Needs a good edit.
