Five long-missing children are about to be returned.

It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air....

Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one.

All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Speculation grows that the mysterious abductor is enacting a cruel revenge plot due to a murderer that Kate put in jail years before.

Kate isn't sure what to believe. But one thing is certain - she's about to begin the battle of her life. When the children were first stolen, she was prevented from investigating the case.

But now, Kate will be relentless in uncovering the identity of the abductor and discovering what happened to Ivy.

didnt finish

Bought this book because I'd finished The Game you Played by the same author (which was great). The narration in this book irritated me. The attempts at the American and Ocker accents were terrible. Storyline seemed good. I will go back to it when I finish my other books (maybe).

Good story well crafted

I found Anni Taylor as a writer with Birds in Flight.
This book One Last Child is the first in a series about Tallman’s Valley Detectives. Cleary her writing style improved by Birds in Flight
In this book she leads us on a journey with Kate Wakeland the detective on the case of 5 missing children, one her granddaughter. While the story is well crafted there are a few things I found annoying. The readers are not idiots so not everything needs to be spelt out and explained. Grimshaw as a senior detective was very annoying and I don’t know why she was portrayed as she was.
Why on Earth would a cop block any leads such as the Maremma dogs. Also Australians do not use the term slot machines.
I was not a fan of the narrator’s voice ( sorry ) accents were terrible, such as the Indian guy that morphed into Chinese!
Overall a good book, I will read more of Anni Taylor’s stories.
