Story
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

Story
This is the story of how King Charles was shaped and moulded by his heritage. His mother was the woman he always loved but could never be close to. As Queen she held the Pandora’s box of the crown and all he could do was wait and learn. In his mother’s old age, he finally received the affection and respect from her he had craved for so long. This book documents his life through many personal anecdotes from his family and his friends from the moment the guns saluted his birth until St. Edwards Crown was placed on his head and he was officially declared as the King at his Coronation.

Publisher's Summary
From New York Times bestselling author of Jackie, Janet & Lee comes a fresh and often startling look at the life of the legendary former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
Based on hundreds of interviews with friends, family, and lovers over a thirty-year period—as well as previously unreleased material from the JFK Library—Kennedy historian J. Randy Taraborrelli paints an unforgettable new portrait of a woman whose flaws and contradictions only serve to make her even more iconic. “I have three lives,” Jackie told a former lover, “public, private and secret.” In this revealing biography, listeners will become intimately familiar with all three.
New insights include:
· Jackie’s cold feet before her wedding to Jack Kennedy and her secret plan to avoid moving into the White House with him.
· Jackie's plan to meet with the woman with whom her husband, Aristotle Onassis, was again having an affair, Maria Callas…and why, in the end, she decided against it.
· The truth about the nude photos of Jackie which scandalized her in the 1970s…and which family member had betrayed her by selling them.
· Her unusual relationship with Maurice Templesman, which was never what outsiders believed it to be.
· The never-before-reported, last-ditch efforts to save Jackie’s life with experimental cancer treatments, and the doctor who wouldn’t risk jail time in order to treat her.
Twenty-nine years after her death and sixty years after the assassination of President Kennedy, Jackie delivers the last word on one of the most famous women in the world.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press.
Critic Reviews
“Taraborrelli’s nearly 25 years of research and interviewing sheds new light on every phase of Jacqueline Bouvier’s life . . . An absorbing and comprehensive account of one of the most remarkable women of the 20th century.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Readable and deeply researched, [Jackie] is a refreshingly complex portrait of a woman too often defined by her relationships with men. Readers who enjoyed the author’s other Kennedy biographies will not be able to put this down.”—Publishers Weekly

Sentimentalized
Rather saccharine. Nothing new of any substance for followers of Kennedy history. Interesting focus on the Auchincloss & Onassis connections. Still no idea of who she really was, which I suppose, in the end, was one of her life’s greatest wishes fulfilled. Ironic that she wanted “secrets” for the bios she sought from others while remaining silent about her own.

Jackie, the pretender or the distraction
"Every man I know went to bed with Gilda...and woke up with me" (Rita Hayworth).
The book 'Jackie' by J. Randy Taraborrelli has taught me how lucky the most famous woman, Jackie, in the world was in her time and how she seems to continue to influence today. She was lucky in the sense that she had, from birth, an incredibly close nit, strong and positively influential family members (both men and women) in her life. In actual fact, they looked after her all her life. The sad thing is that she never had any sense of awareness of their true importance in her development over the years or her entire life. This book also revealed to me the lack of emotional awareness she had towards other women, such as amazing Icons like Marilyn Monroe, Maria Callas, and other women in her life, such as Christina Onasis. Jackie also displayed a lack of understanding and lack of emotional awareness towards men by exploiting them. These men included the magnificent artist Michael Jackson (truly, if anyone wants to understand him, they should do so through his children and his Creative process. If that's not possible, then forget it. Just enjoy his work instead), the sensitive business man Aristotle Onasis (if we can respect and admire Joe Kennedy, then we can do the same with Aristotle Onasis) and most importantly, JFK (her first husband). My understanding of JFK is that he was merely a man who loved women, and women loved him back equally. That is all I know of him. I believe that throughout JFK's presidency from beginning until the end, Jackie was a great form of distraction to such an extent that there is a lack of understanding of the man, his desire to want to be president, his actual presidency and his impact within America and internationally and most importantly his assassination. Why was he assassinated in the first place? In the book, it is explained that the family wish to display Jackie's outfit from Dallas long after her death. Why? What is the importance of such an outfit? This is a great example of exploitation. I recommend this book. It's great to have a better understanding of Jackie Kennedy Onasis. Wonderful work by the writer.
