Aged 13, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.
As he grows up, Theo learns to glide between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love - and his talisman, the painting, places him at the centre of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling power. Combining unforgettably vivid characters and thrilling suspense, it is a beautiful, addictive triumph - a sweeping story of loss and obsession, of survival and self-invention, of the deepest mysteries of love, identity and fate.

Amazing story - a brilliant narrator
Transported me - fell in love with the characters, so well read David was great with accents. I was disappointed when finished - will miss Theo and Boris.

My favourite book of all time - perfect narration
A friend recommended this to me and promised me i would go "on a spectacular adventure", and The Goldfginch did not disappoint. I loved Secret History but avoided this one for years because it was about art theft, a topic which didn't interest me. From the moment I started listening I was hooked. The story and characters are utterly absorbing, but I have to say it was the narrator's voice which sold it. I guess he must be an actor because he did all the different voices - perfectly - and it's the first audio book where I felt he was 100 percent in character (a boy who grows into a young man). I loved this book so much that I shed tears at the end. Partly because it was so beautifully written, partly because it was over.

unexpectedly loved it
Absolutely loved this book. it's quiet long but I could have kept listening. There were parts that dragged on a little but it didn't matter because I loved it so much. Very detailed, honest and real.
I became quiet attached to the characters and was very disappointed when it ended.

The finale
The last two chapters were the most insightful essentially summarising the themes throughout the whole book. This edition was very well narrated.
