About this listen
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.
Dorothea Brooke is an outstanding heroine; Middlemarch is filled with characters that are vivid and true, comic and moving. It is one of the greatest novels in the English language.

Middlemarch Journey
Juliet Stevenson's clear diction and delicate character delineation leads us through the tortuous Middlemarch journey. We become completely absorbed in each character's hopes and despair. A story I could hear again and again and never tire of the deceivingly simple plot.

Singular, you know
Superb. The wit and intellect of the author positively glitter in this delightful performance. Eliot truly must have been a fiercely clever individual. There is a complete lack of pretension in her writing, astonishing given the philosophical reach of certain passages, the emotional intensity of others, and the frequent allusion to great works and ideas. Juliet Stevenson's performance adds much to the vitality of the prose, the depth of characterisation, and the seamless weave of the narrative voice with the thought and speech of the persons depicted. Bravo

a chuckle
story incidental to this wonderful and insightful novel. I chuckled all the way through at the cleverly articulated insights into humanity and its foibles.

A great work
It was difficult getting in to this classic work but once I did get in to it I thoroughly enjoyed it. What a shame that great writers needed to write under a male pen name when n their works were rightly remembered in history as masterpieces.

Outstanding performance by Juliet Stevenson
Always wanted to read this classic. However, was somewhat disappointed. Eliot has a great talent. for characterization but sometimes spends far too long describing the character's thinking. However, I absolutely loved. Juliet Stevenson's performance! What a talent she has for making characters come alive. with just her voice. I have never heard anything like it. She made the whole book worthwhile. to listen to. Every single character came alive with unique personality. Absolutely loved Mrs. Cadwallader in particular. Thank you Juliet. I will be looking. for more books performed by you.

Wonderful. An excellent book, excellently read.
Middlemarch teaches us that other people have interior lives as rich and complex as our own, which is an infinitely valuable lesson for us, and a demonstration of rare insight on the author's part. It is a long and sometimes difficult book, but will doubtless remain with the reader long after its completion. Stevenson's reading is ideally suited to the text, elevating and animating it in the listener's mind. The product is a rare accomplishment in the art of storytelling.

Superb narration
I thoroughly enjoyed Middlemarch. The contrast between Juliet Stevenson's refined speech of the Victorian nobility and her rough male country bumpkin voices made me lol.

Juliet Stevenson brings complex tale to life
Absolutely loved this complex tale of politics, money and the women's lot in Anytown 1830s England.
