Dulcie Bodsworth was the unlikeliest serial killer. She was loved everywhere she went, and the townsfolk of Wilcannia, which she called home in the late 1950s, thought of her as kind and caring. The officers at the local police station found Dulcie witty and charming, and looked forward to the scones and cakes she generously baked and delivered for their morning tea. That was one side of her. Only her daughter Hazel saw the real Dulcie. And what she saw terrified her.

Publisher's Summary
Audie Award, Narration by Author, 2016
Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil", Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred. Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: "Use it," Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work.
It was a lesson she would need. At 22, just as her career was taking off, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. As her star continued to rise, her life became increasingly demanding and fulfilling, a whirlwind of passionate love affairs, life-saving friendships, and bone-crunching work. Through it all Mulgrew remained haunted by the loss of her daughter until, two decades later, she found the courage to face the past and step into the most challenging role of her life both on and off screen.
We know Kate Mulgrew for the strong women she's played - Captain Janeway on Star Trek; the tough-as-nails Red on Orange Is the New Black. Now we meet the most inspiring and memorable character of all: herself. By turns irreverent and soulful, laugh-out-loud funny and heart-piercingly sad, Born with Teeth is the breathtaking memoir of a woman who dares to live life to the fullest, on her own terms.

Absolutely riveting command performance
Being a massive Star Trek fan the Voyager series was right up my alley and having watched Kate in that series and in Orange is the New Black as Red, I was immediately motivated to listen to this book. I listen to most books nowadays as I do long drives by myself and reading is something I have loved all my life. I think this is honestly the best audio book I have ever listened to. The story is captivating and Kate's narration is outstanding. I have never been into memoirs or autobiographies but Kate drew me in and made me feel like we were having a chat between friends. Just wow!

The confessions of Janeway
I loved Mulgrew in Star Trek Voyager but didn’t really know much about her. What a fascinating person and what an eventful life! She doesn’t shy away from her mistakes and is humble about her achievements. And she sure has triumphed over adversity with some terrible tragedy in her life. Again, she presents this in a measured and non-dramatic way. I came away from this book desperate to watch some of her other work and I think I know also have a better appreciation for Voyager, knowing about her state of mind when filming it. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Mulgrew’s writing - I am not sure if she had a ghost writer, but it’s a well written and well paced book.

Kate Mulgrew - Legendary
I had long been a fan of Star Trek the original series I was allowed to watch as a child. Later I avidly watched Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard and just as avidly loved the next generation. Then I heard of a new series with a female Captain and I was so excited, from the first episode I was hooked and the person holding the rod was Kate Mulgrew. I am
So glad that I listened to this book, to hear of her life, her family and her loves. The tragedies she endured as a woman and her triumph as an actor. This was the best 10 hours of my life being able to understand and enjoy the stories beautifully narrated by the very talented Kate Mulgrew.
