Critic Reviews

"Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem.... The book is impeccably clear.... This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject." ( Foreword Magazine)

Terrible name... excellent content

When I was recommended this book I didn’t think I would get much from it. However, it is wonderful and I will be recommending it to a number of friends. I will also be listening to it again- I think it is a book you could RE-visit a number of times and learn something new each time. Highly recommend!

make sure you have a pen and paper!

A great book to start your investigation into self-healing. If you're wanting the most from the exercises in mindfulness and self-reflection, be sure that you take the time to write down your feelings during the activities throughout the book. This book will take at least a few days to work through in order for the listener to really absorb the activities and reflect.

Interesting book but something is missing...

There were insightful learning in the book, but I found it very black and white, and quite judgmental. I'd have liked to understand how people became this way, and not just how awful they are. After all, no one wants to be emotionally immature, their sad upbringing pushed them to behave this way.

Life changing

This is one of the best, and by far the most empowering book I’ve ever read about ongoing relationships with difficult parents. After seeing my parents trauma and addiction as almost sacred for my whole life it was really something to reframe it as immaturity. Confronting at first, but then liberating, and much more practical if you want a manageable relationship and to stop playing the record and get on with your own life. Thank you.

Very helpful

This is an incredibly helpful book for anyone trying to heal from childhood trauma. It was painful and confronting at times but also a relief to identify patterns of behaviour in my parents and hear how this has affected me. The author gives you strategies to deal with your parents and how to identify healthy emotional people to build better intimate relationships. The narrator is terrific.
