About this listen

A HIT NETFLIX FILM, WINNER OF 7 BAFTAS AND NOMINATED FOR 9 OSCARS

The most famous anti-war novel ever written.

One by one the boys begin to fall...

In 1914 a room full of German schoolboys, fresh-faced and idealistic, are goaded by their schoolmaster to troop off to the 'glorious war'. With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up. What follows is the moving story of a young 'unknown soldier' experiencing the horror and disillusionment of life in the trenches.

Great audiobook

Very well written book, the narrator did a fantastic job and the writing flows smoothly. The story is haunting, but it is told in a way that keeps the reader interested from start to finish. Truly a remarkable novel, and a must read.

A Harrowing Story Perfectly Read

This was gripping from start to finish. Brilliantly written, well paced and a fascinating insight into the terrible experience of trench warfare. Everyone should read this.

Outstanding peak over the trenches

For good reason, this is regarded as one of, if not the best depictions of life for a soldier in WW1. Hope, despair, mateship, courage, cowardice, insanity and every other emotion is wonderfully represented. I must read. An all time classic.

Amazing story

I highly recommend this book, raw and intimate view of those that went to war in the front line.

Everyone should read this book.

One of the best books ever written help convey the tragedy of war, and the loss of youth.
This should be studied in high school literature.
It is as important as Anne Frank's diary and Nadeem Aslam's 'The Blind Man's Garden' to help us learn from the horrors of the past and how e as people are affected on the individual level by events that often surpass the minute scope due to their scale.
The performance is nice and clear.

What took me so long to finally read this book?

I am disappointed in myself that I didn’t read this book until deep into my 40’s. Probably the best book I have read and wonderfully narrated. I feel I need to watch/rewatch all 3 versions of the movie, not having seen the original but the two more recent iterations a couple of times each.

Excellent

Books like this are difficult. Yes, it is very well written but it is always difficult knowing that society basically sends children to war. I was forced to read this in high school but did not appreciate like I do now as an adult.
One thing about this performance is that the narrator is English and while he does a great job, I think it was not the best pick.

The depth of this book is epic

A truly extraordinary book. Very well written and the narration was excellent. It’s harrowing it’s gut wrenching. It’s sad, it’s funny, but overall it’s a story that brings to life just how futile war is and how the makers of war expect young kids to fight their battles whilst they remain cosy and warm in their chosen abode.

I think about the Great War, the war to end all wars, and I despair that the German’s didn’t learn their lesson, and went back for round 2, targeting the vulnerable and minorities.

And still today, we see war across the world and I wonder if anything will ever be a deterrent.

Reading this book has only strengthened my resolve to condemn war and aggression and educate people to fight for the same.

amazing story

what a wonderful perspective, made me feel for the other side and not look at war with one view.
