Story
A holiday classic by Charles Dickens. Originally published in 1843, Dickens worried about the disparity between the wealthy and the impoverished, and it was his attempt to bring this disparity into the light of day, to appeal to the die-hard capitalists to take care of the downtrodden masses. Since this inequity continues, this story is still popular, and will probably continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

Story
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Complete Sherlock Holmes - Heirloom collectiom
Have been a fan of Mr Holmes & Dr Watson for many years.
Have hardback and ebook collections.
Needed a decent audiobook of the whole for a long time. Used Librivox for a longtime but the app isn't brilliant and as the readings are mostly free there is a lot that didn't suit my aural standards.
Trawled Audible for a while before settling on this one. I did listen to a few samples, each more than once, including the wonderful Stephen Fry version but once I heard the Simon Vance edition there was no viable alternative.
If I have one whinge about this version it's the fact that each story, including the four novellas, is not accorde it's own natural distinction - for example "A scandal in Bohemia" doesn't appear under that title as the individual stories are concatenated into arbitrary audio chapters. That means you cannot browse Chapters to select a particular story, other than by adding a note or bookmark.
Fairly minor considering the excellence of narration and recording quality.
Highly recommended

This performance is perfect.
I really don't know why they bothered to redo this with Stephen Fry, this performance is perfect. Listening to this I can see in my mind Watson, Holmes and everyone they encounter, (whenever I listen to Fry all I can see is Fry). This is definitely the far better version, once you've heard it, this will be Watson's and Holmes' voices in your mind forever more....

Wonderful stories brilliantly performed
A regular audible listener I originally came across this when a new Sherlock Holmes release performed by Stephen Dry hit my suggestion box.
Normally I am a non-fiction listener but enjoyed Sherlock Holmes as a teenager or young adult and listened a sample.
I found Stephen Fry's performance however somewhat not quite to my liking. Partly because I preferred a faster rate of speech (maybe he was 'acting' it a bit much for me) but mostly I found the reading a bit 'modern' perhaps in accent also. It maybe have been influenced by my visualizing it having seen some of his acting.
Further searching found Simon Vance's reading. Immediately faster but also having a somewhat more period feel with an educated and perhaps more aristocratic tone. I realized later that he has read countless other works and in his sample (and full performance) I found myself experiencing the world in the way I liked. Reading other characters in the right tone without distracting 'acting' that might be tempting to some.
Overall Arthur Conan Doyle's works are a masterpiece (really the founding of all the modern crime shows on TV) and performed faultless with congruency to what I would imagine a perfect reading would be.
Perhaps for those reading (listening) to this for the first time might prefer a different voice. But there are other readings on audible for Sherlock Holmes. I found this to be the best. Try the sample before choosing.
Of course with membership also it is a bargain.
