Seventy years ago, Joe Rubinstein walked out of a Nazi concentration camp. Until now, his story has been hidden from the world. Shortly before dawn on a frigid morning in Radom, Poland, 21-year-old Joe answered a knock at the door of the cottage he shared with his widowed mother and siblings. German soldiers forced him onto a crowded open-air truck. Wearing only an undershirt and shorts, Joe was left on the truck with no protection from the cold. By the next morning, several around him would be dead. From there, things got worse for young Joe, much worse.

Poland, 1943: Please don't do this! Her shrill cry pierces the night air, the screams breaking the silence of the falling snow. But the man she calls to does not turn, vanishing into the darkness with a child clasped in his arms.
Publisher's Summary
For the Shwartz family, survival was the only option. Their will to live, and a bit a luck, kept the family safe during the Holocaust, bringing them across Eastern Europe all the way to Israel.
In 1937, the Shwartz family lived a calm life in their small village in Poland. Fifteen-year-old Rachel liked to sing and go out dancing at a local night club, while her older brother David was busy running a farm and raising a family with his wife Hinda. But all that changed when the war reached Butla.
First, the Russians came and kicked them out of their house. Then, the Nazis came to cart them off. But the Shwartz family resisted. David decided that no matter what, his family would not be taken captive. Instead, he snuck his family out of their village, through a large forest, and into Hungary, a place that was supposed to be safe. But that didn't last long. Again the Shwartz family found themselves on the run, escaping prison, Nazis, and bombings.
My Family's Survival is the incredible true story of how the Shwartz family survived the Holocaust. It is a powerful tale of one family's triumph during history's darkest moments.

I go through phases with what I'm reading. Sometimes I go on a true crime phase, sometimes I'm on history phase, sometimes on military phase, sometimes I'm on a biography phase. No matter what phase I'm in I become a little bit obsessive.
At the moment I have been in a bit of a holocaust phase, and that sounds a little bit weird- but it just means that I'm reading a lot of holocaust memoirs. This is the second in a series of Holocaust memoirs that I have been reading this month and I will probably read a few more before I'm done.
This is really different to anything that I read before in terms of a holocaust memoirs, because none of the people in the book ended up in a concentration camp. And happily, the main family all survived.
So this is the story of the Schwartz family told from the perspective of Rachel, who at the beginning of the war is a teenage Polish student who is Jewish. At the beginning of the book she has recently lost her father and has moved in with her brother, his wife and their two children. Rachel's brother is about 20 years older he is in his late 30s and is a farmer. His name is David. His wife, Hinda, is the same age as David and acts as a motherly/sisterly influence on Rachel. At the start of the book Hinda and David have two children; Sarah and Ahbi. Shortly after the book begins they give birth to baby Yosi.
The book tracks Rachel and her family throughout the late 1930s and into the 1940s. At the beginning of the war Rachel's family is not particularly affected by the Soviet invasion, but then as the war progresses there are more and more limitations put on Rachel's family, to the point they are dispossessed of their home, and have to flee their homeland.
This book follows Rachel and her family through their flight from Poland into Hungary, into Romania and finally to Palestine. There were some truly remarkable things that happened to this family. And it's hard to believe some of the things that happened, as there was so much luck involved in them surviving. There was also they also able to survive due to the kindness and willingness of various people to help and support them.
The one thing I would say is I would've liked a slightly longer epilogue where we could've learnt a little bit more about each of the characters and what they want to do with their lives. I feel like you from such an emotional connection with these people as you read through some of the horrific things that happened to them arm and you want to know that they got their happy ending. You want to know who they married how how many children they had and if they were successful. That's probably my one complaint. Overall I 100% recommend this book it was beautiful I cried and you'll fall in love with this watch family.
The bravery the each of them showed particularly Ahbi, such a brave little boy broke my heart.
