Publisher's Summary
The seventh book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.
Murdered people don't kill themselves. A quiet night on a country road. The stillness shattered by a car engulfed in flames, and a burned body discovered in the driver's seat. As the investigation unfolds, DCI Carol Jordan and psychological profiler. Tony Hill quickly realise that this is more than just a tragic accident. And so begins the hunt for a truly terrifying killer, someone who believes he is invisible, untraceable and untouchable. As other victims are found to have met the same terrible fate, and with more women at risk, Tony and Carol are drawn into a dark and twisted web of fear and revenge that will force them to question their own ideas of justice.
Critic Reviews
"One of the most surprising twists you'll read this year. Outstanding." (Irish Independent)
"Engrossing...a colossal reminder of just why McDermid has been the queen of crime for three decades." (Heat)

Heartwrenching!
I've read this series for so long that the characters feel real and I guess that's the sign of a great writer. I'm not sure if it was the authors intention but I constantly seem to be angry at the Carol Jordan character. Love it and looking forward to the next one. would hate this series to end.

The ending spoiled this book
So much angst and navel gazing can be very tiring and by the end of this book I was ready to kill both Tony Hill and Carol Jordan myself. The ending was ridiculous and so unnecessary in line with the events which would have resolved the murders. The murder plot itself was clever and the book would have stood quite well without the self-indulgent dramatics from the lead characters. Very disappointing.

Good Story
This was a great book but the narrator made a hash job of the accents and female voices. This was a big distraction from the plot.

Reminds me of A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens
There are a few positives from the very unhappy ending of this book. These include:
Carol resisted giving in to her alcohol addiction despite her woes.
Maybe Tony and Carol can finally work out their relationship problems and
Maybe there is a way that they can continue to be an effective, but different crime busting team as well as a couple.
I hope that this series is not going to end here. Please do not disappoint your fans Val.

Awesome
It has been worth the wait for this 10th book in the Carol Jordan and Tony Hill series.
Val McDermid is Supreme. This audio book is written by my favourite author and read by my favourite narrator, I have thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster ride of this book and the series. I hope it isn't the end of the line for Carol, Tony or any of the RMIT team.

Disappointing
Having read and enjoyed books written by Val McDermid and being a fan of Wire in the Blood I was looking forward to this book. I was so disappointed!
The book is set in the north of England and I imagined some of the characters being northerners as they were in the television series. The narrator was awful, totally wrong for this book. As the main characters are female it would have been more effective having a female narrator.
I thought the actual storyline was pretty boring.
As a northener myself I will not be listening to Saul Reichlin reading Tony Hill and Carol Jordan books again it is too painful!

Not a favourite - just okay.
I didn't enjoy the narrator, won't listen to anymore books by him, His voice didn't suit the characters, I found it difficult to differentiate the characters.

This one of the series simply doesn't work!
Have enjoy a few of the Hill Jordon series - but not this one. The premise was flaud and the little stories within tedious to the extreme. Much required too much suspension of fact.
Definitely not worth the read

I returned this book
I've been reading the Tony Hill series in order and I was so annoyed that this book has almost the exact same killer as the last book. Almost same method, almost same reason. It feels recycled and lazy, an afterthought. No way was I basically paying for the same book twice.
I don't really like the narrator for this series either, but I'm pretty used to him by now. I don't think I'll bother with the rest of the series.
